about

the Death of Me London, UK

Matthew Kay has been making good, honest, folk-pop/acoustic-punk songs as the Death of Me since 2003. There've been hiatuses - all good bands have a hiatus or two - but new songs keep coming, gigs get played and people clap. You know how it is. Anyway, these are songs about being alive, which means they're about girls and God and doubt, hope, fear and joy, love and failure. I hope you can relate.. ... more

Track Name: I Can't Save You From Robots
Would you be wooed if I made you something good from the pages of some fashion magazine just to prove I could?
But no-one ever slew a monster with their ability to knit so I've been swimming twice a week in case we meet a giant squid

I've got craft skills like drawing and cutting out and sticking
but I don't know kung-fu so when the robots come...
I can't save you

I could paint a picture for you to hang in your room of a lion or something
Yeah lions are pretty cool!
And I may not be very brave but I know how to use a lathe so when the vampires attack I can make a big sharp steak

I've got craft skills like painting and measuring and knitting
but I don't know karate so when the monsters come don't hide behind me
I've got craft skills like hammering and sawing and drilling
but I don't know kung-fu so when the robots come...
I can't save you

I could make you a birthday card
a Christmas card
a Valentines card
a card to say I'm sorry or get well soon or thank you
And I can re-wire a plug and change a fuse but I don't know what I'd do if a robot came and electrified you.
Track Name: Secretly I'm Human
You wait in all my hiding places
You are always awake
I turn around and I can't help but recognise the thrill of the chase
So I run to a place where no-one can see and I beat myself up so I can be free
But I know you've been watching and it's hard to believe:
that you could have gracious feelings for me

Oh I should've known you'd follow me through everyday's failure to be free
I can't promise to keep my eye on you,
Just don't lose sight of me

So I lay myself bare to the back teeth, I am sick in my bones and my heart
I'm burnt to my foundations; frighteningly close to your open arms
I fall and I can't get up again
I'm bitten but I'm not averse to a fight (come on)
Paint me a new picture of paradise in magnolia and white

Oh I should've known you'd follow me through everyday's failure to be free
I can't promise to keep my eye on you,
Just don't lose sight of me
Track Name: Cedars of Lebanon
I wish I were one to release tricks from the Lord's sleeve
A staff in my hand, a hand on my shoulder
Soldiering on into the fray
I hold life lightly
It's hard enough to believe that you really do exist and you're good
And you do give a damn about me

But weeds grow up fast
We hang up our harps and we weep
That now is not our time

Would you drink from my cup?
I would heap burning coals for you.
I choose my own stones, I shoulder great burdens - soldiering on
These images, I know, are deployed somewhat off-hand
There's space here to grow,
Yeah and I know that this might take the next fifty years or so

Weeds grow up fast
We hang up our harps and we weep
That now is not our time
